چکیده

Palpable thyroid nodules are more common in women, and male/female ratio ranged from 1.2 to 4.3.[1,3] Thyroid nodules may cause hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, cosmetic issues, and problems in other organs such as compression, and they also have the potential for malignancy. [4] Therefore, the accurate evaluation of thyroid nodules is crucial. In recent years, the role of fine -needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is increasing regarding the management methods as well as its role in detection of malignancy potentials of thyroid nodules. No single diagnostic methods used for the definitive diagnosis of thyroid cancers, such as radiographs, US, scintigraphy and suppression therapy, is effective enough to make a benign/malignant differentiation alone. FNAC has been used since the 1950s, and is one of the effective methods in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.[5].In this article, a retrospective study of FNAC of thyroid lesions over a period of three years is analysed with reiew of literature. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology versus Fine Needle Capillary Sampling in Cytological Diagnosis of Thyroid Lesions

Background and Objectives: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an established out- patient procedure used in primary diagnosis of palpable thyroid lesions. A modified technique fine needle capillary sampling (FNCS) obviates the need of suction, is less painful, patient friendly and reported to overcome the problem of inadequate and bloody specimens. The aim of our study was to compare the...

Diagnosis of Follicular Lesions of Undetermined Significance in Fine-Needle Aspirations of Thyroid Nodules

Aim. We aimed to analyze the diagnostic criteria proposed by the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology for follicular lesions of undetermined significance (FLUS), the risk of cancer and diagnostic improvement with use of immunocytochemistry. Methods. For each FLUS diagnosis, we analyzed the cytological criteria (9 Bethesda criteria), secondary fine-needle aspiration (FNA) results,...

Combination of aspiration and non-aspiration fine needle biopsy for cytological diagnosis of thyroid nodules

Background: Good cytological sample is very important for the cytological diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of prepared samples by the combination of aspiration and non- aspiration fine needle biopsy. Methods: In this descriptive – analytical study, sampling was done simultaneously for each patient in fine needle aspiration and non-aspiration biops...

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Parathyroid Lesions

BACKGROUND There has been an increase in the use of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for the diagnosis of parathyroid lesions (PLs). Differentiation between a thyroid lesion and a PL is not easy because of their similar features. We reviewed parathyroid aspirates in our institution and aimed to uncover trends in diagnostic criteria. METHODS We selected 25 parathyroid aspirates (from 6 m...

Statistical Analysis of the Diagnostic Accuracy of Morphological Features in the Cytological Diagnosis of Proliferative Breast Lesions

Cytological features of the various proliferative breast lesions have been described by numerous authors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of these criteria in diagnosing epithelial hyperplasia with atypia (EHA), papillary lesions (PLs) and radial scar/complex sclerosing lesions (RS/CSLs) by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). EHA is a cytological diagnosis that raises a h...

Cytological Features That Differentiate Follicular Neoplasm from Mimicking Lesions

BACKGROUND It is difficult to correctly diagnose follicular neoplasms (FNs) on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) because it shares many cytological features with other mimicking lesions. The aim of this study was to identify the cytological features that differentiate FNs from mimicking lesions. METHODS We included the cytological slides from 116 cases of thyroid FN diagnosed on FNAC, an...
